Top Dog Sports Fishing Boat Charter FAQ Frequently Asked Sports Fishing Questions

Question: Why should I book the Top Dog?

Answer: You should book the Top Dog for your next fishing charter because we are dedicated to exceeding your sport fishing expectations. You’ll be fishing from Captain Joe Turner’s custom-built, twin diesel sport fishing vessel, Top Dog, under the capable hands of our well-trained crew.

Our track record for selecting the very best fishing locations in all seasons increases your chances of success. We strive to run the best trip possible every day. Our consistency, service, and success keep our clients coming back to Top Dog, trip after trip, year after year.

Question: What do you provide?

Answer: In addition to boat, crew, and friendly instruction, we provide the fishing tackle, bait, coolers, ice and fishing licenses. We have all city, county, state, and federal licenses, so you do not need to purchase any additional licenses.

Question: What do I need to bring with me?

Answer: Bring the food and beverages of your choice. We provide the coolers and ice. Alcoholic beverages are permitted.

We also suggest that you bring polarized sunglasses, sunscreen, hat, and shoes. Oh, and don’t forget a cell phone so you can call home and share the moment when you just reeled in your catch!

Question: How many people are included in the private charter price?

Answer: The private charter price is for the boat, and is the same whether your trip is for one person or up to six people. There are no age limits, but the six-person limit includes everyone, even infants. This law is mandated by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Question: Are there other rules that I should be aware of?

Answer: The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) makes and oversees a set of voluntary guidelines. Typically, these prohibit the use of nets and catching fish other than by hooking them in the mouth. Some fish are caught and released. Your knowledgeable Top Dog captain and crew are aware of all such regulations and will keep you appropriately informed.

Question: What if it rains on the day I have scheduled my trip?

Answer: We fish rain or shine. Rain gear isn’t necessary, however, because on the Top Dog you can retreat to the comfort of the salon. Even when the forecast calls for rough seas, that usually means way off shore, and we fish within three miles of shore. We can run in wind speeds up to 25 knots and in 6 to 8 foot seas. We have a “wait and see” policy, because we want to help you keep to your plan, but in the rare event when we must cancel due to weather conditions, there is no charge. The decision is made by the captain, who has your comfort, safety, and fishing success in mind.

Question: What type of fish can we catch?

Answer: We catch many different types of fish, including Shark, Sailfish, Barracuda, Mahi Mahi, King Mackeral, Snapper, Grouper, and many more.

Question: What are my chances for catching fish?

Answer: While no one can guarantee success, we can say with confidence that your chances of catching fish on a Top Dog charter are excellent. Depending on the water, the season, and other factors, we will discuss with you the options that would be most productive. We can fish in different locations and with different techniques during your half-day (4 hours) , three-quarters day (6 hours), or full day (8 hours) charter. Our wide experience pays off in fishing success for you.

Question: What can I do with the fish we catch?

Answer: Many people, including our crew, enjoy eating fresh fish. If you would like to take any of your catch home with you, our crew will be happy to clean it for you. Otherwise, rest assured that it will not go to waste!

If you are lucky enough to catch a trophy quality fish, we can arrange to have it mounted and shipped to you. We work with an excellent marine taxidermist who has many years of experience in preserving trophy fish.

Question: What is a standard tip for the captain and mate?

Answer: Our crew splits their tips evenly, and 20% of the charter price is customary. We have only professional, experienced mates aboard the Top Dog, and they rely on tips just as bartenders and waiters do.

Question: Can I bring my own personal tackle?

Answer: Of course! Our goal is to provide you with the most enjoyable charter experience possible, so bring along your favorite rod or lure if you like. Just let us know ahead of time so we can plan accordingly. However, keep in mind that we can provide everything you will need in the way of tackle. You can travel more easily knowing that you don’t need to pack and transport rods and reels.

Question: How much experience do I need?

Answer: Absolutely none. We frequently guide anglers who have never caught a fish. Our experienced crew will guide you every step of the way. That’s the beauty of a Top Dog charter. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, our goal is your success.

Question: What time should we arrive?

Answer: Plan on arriving at the boat one half hour before your charter. Allow extra travel time in season and on holiday weekends.

Question: How do I make a reservation with Top Dog Fishing Charters?

Answer: Call or email to make sure that the day you want is available. Give us a credit card number or send a check to finalize your reservation. We look forward to fishing with you soon!
